Tommy was born into a Navy family and spent the first 7 years of his life traveling from duty station to station, eventually setteling in Raleigh NC. He graduated from Broughton High School in 1968. He then studied pre-carpentry (poly sci) at UNC Chapel Hill and graduated in 1972.
Tommy spent the next three years working as a framing carpenter, before returning to school to get his Masters of Science in Environmental Health. He graduated from East Tennesse State in 1977.
In 1980, Tommy earned his General Contractors license and over the next few years he built 3 sets of 200 unit apartment complexes for The Apartment Group of NC Inc. In 1982 he teamed up with a friend to form Oates/Stone Construction. He built his first passive solar house in 1984 as well as a number of modernist homes designed by Brian Shawcroft.
In the late 1980's, Tommy, switched gears and started working on larger commercial projects as a sub-contractor from companies like Dant-Clayton. Durring these years (1986-1993) he worked on municipal parks and athletic stadiums as well as residential construction. He finished his last big stadium project in 2005, when he installed 17,000 seats in the Buckeye home field at Ohio State. Some of his local projects include the MudCats Stadium in Zebulan, NC and parks in Cary NC such as Bond and Dunham.
Tommy teamed up with his son Jason in 2005. They work on both commercial and residential projects in the triangle area.
